Winter Break: Essential Information for Students

As the winter break approaches, we want to ensure you have all the resources and advice you need to stay safe, supported, and well-prepared during this time. Below is a comprehensive guide to key services, support options, and practical tips to help you make the most of your break.

University services and opening hours

From 5pm on Friday 20 December 2024 until 9am on Thursday 2 January 2025 many university services will be closed for the winter break. During this time, we will not be responding to enquiries, and responses will resume after Thursday 2 January 2025.

The Library will be closed from 4pm Tuesday 24 December 2024, reopening at 8:30am Friday 27 December. However, exact hours may vary so please check the library website for opening hours.

Remember, the Hubble Portal can help you find the answer to many of your questions, and will remain available for self-guided support.

Wellbeing support

Your wellbeing is a priority, even during the holidays. The Student Assistance Programme (SAP) offers 24/7 confidential support for a range of issues, including stress, anxiety, and homesickness. You can access SAP by calling 0800 028 3766 or through the Wisdom app, which includes live chat, self-help tools, and resources. To register, download the app on Android or iOS and use the code MHA148306.

External support

If you need assistance beyond what the University provides, there are several external services you can access:

  • Emergency Services: Dial 999 if you are in immediate danger or require urgent assistance from police, fire, or medical services.
  • NHS Services: For health and mental health advice, contact NHS 111. This is available for urgent but non-emergency issues.
  • Samaritans: Offering confidential emotional support 24/7, you can contact them through a variety of methods, including calling them at 116 123, to talk through any difficulties you're facing.
  • Shout: Shout is a free and confidential mental health service. You can text 85258 to connect with trained volunteers.

Campus security

The University of Hull’s Facilities and Security Team provides 24/7 cover throughout the year, providing a security presence on campus and to the University’s accommodation. You can reach them at 01482 465555 (emergency) or 01482 466868 (non-emergency). If you live in university accommodation, on-call staff are available; contact your accommodation reception for details.

Academic support, extensions and additional considerations

We hope you take time to relax over the winter break, but it is important that you also take this time to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Ensure you allocate time for revision and submissions; you can explore online self-help materials using the Library SkillsGuides or look at this article for Revision Tips.

It is also essential that you leave enough time to submit a request for an extension or additional consideration. If you believe you require an extension or additional considerations for your assessment, you can visit the myJourney module for guidance or complete the Request for Extension or Additional Consideration form through the Hubble Portal.

For extensions, a request must be submitted no later than 48 hours after the assessment deadline, extensions cannot be used for fixed date assessments such as on-campus examinations.

For additional consideration, the request must be submitted within ten working days of the assessment deadline.
